I was going to jump in with a comment about painting our new TouchScreen Kiosk's Pink, but then thought about what it is that really needs doing.

I remember some time ago a conversation we had after a post by Miguel on Girls and Technology and there was a look in your eye that showed you were thinking a bit more deeply about this. You are in a perfect position to bring abut this change, and are the perfect person to do so. You have the chance to talk with several of these girls (esp 1 in particular), get their feelings of what they would like to make this desirable to them. Once you get a feel for it, let me know how I can help.

I read that page that GH had linked to and was floored by the line "girls lag behind boys in use, understanding and interest on many levels." Knowing the girls in question, this is the exact opposite. Our boys seem to be loosing the plot and I haven't seen many that produce the type of work that I would expect. But I also know that this changes with every group that comes through.

As we've seen so far this year, there is a need for change in the way this subject has been structured. Lets make it worthwhile for everyone as a desirable subject.

I'll pass on this article
"Integrating technology into the lives of girls" to help with your research into "feminisation"

http://www.ascilite.org.au/aset-archives/confs/2002/treyvaud.html

If they have more success and fun with ICT in the classroom, surely that will spill over into them taking it seriously as an HSC subject

We have only a handful doing it as a subject for HSC ...a pity really because they do tend to excel at it. With such a shortage of IT professionals its an area they need to be aware of for a career ...lots of choice, good money, travel etc. Girls seem to see computer people as isolated geeks and that's a perception that needs to be corrected. Girls tend to be collaborative and non-competitive and the new style of assessment task and IT facilitated learning should suit them very well.

Thanks to both TFT and GHUGS for your comments of support. One lesson I forgot to mention was learning how important it is to surround yourself with like-minded people as a buffer against those who are ignorant of your circumstances! Being back amongst it all has been a real eye-opener in terms of seeing those people who are judgemental, self-absorbed, and living in an idealistic world. Thank the Lord for those who are realistic about themselves and their situations and do the best with what they have as they just get on with the job. I'll sit for a coffee (Decaf!) with them any time.

Like the cobbler's family we sometimes fail to take care of ourselves and our own, but I'm going to take issue with the title of your blog. You are one of the most centred people I know ....I have learnt a lot from you about reflecting and I have progressed through having known you. It's just that sometimes, a wire gets crossed and things go a little awry. I firmly believe that paradise is safe in your hands and in your heart and that anywhere and anybody around you is better off for inheriting some of your glow.

Hey, you don't know how happy I was to read this.

It's funny how when one piece of the puzzle is missing, you'll never get things to look right. And I can apply that to many things at present. The issues at work have seemed either greater, or less important (depending on what they were) without my "partner in crime" to encourage, prompt, push, kick me in the behind etc. The balance has simply been all wrong.

Now you've come along way, and as we've commented on another blog "your back" which will allow us (collective us) to get on with the plan. It's been great to see you re-emerge these last few weeks. You are getting your focus right. Enjoy your times at home, with S, whatever you are doing for You!

Now the weight is about to shift to the other side I fear, as it's my turn to follow suit in light of recent events. But fear not, the plan is still there, it still exists in some form. Hey, we may not work through it with the urgency that we believe is needed. But maybe urgency is not what is required. Maybe looking at the bigger picture from our new (and in my case yet to be defined) perspectives will lead us to the reality of what is our goal.

We are here for the students and their learning. That won't change. But if we come at it from our "new" selves we can only do it better.

Well done on finding the Paradise that had become invisible to you.
