We had an opportunity to make a presentation to all SPCC campuses yesterday and we featured our innovative vision for the KICT Committee.

This group of students is to be drawn from across our PS campus and will be the students’ voice in the ongoing integration of ICT at our campus. They will operate as a sub-committee to the ICT Committee that was established in 2007. As teachers and administrators we felt it was timely to involve the student body in this committee and give them an opportunity for ‘ownership’ and positive input.

We have some funding, from our P&F,  to host a training day for the KICT Committee and get them up and running. This will be used to give the kids some experience of meetings procedures, the roles and responsibilities of committee members and as a time for them to start to build their own vision for the future of ICT in our college.

KICT Committee was well received at “SPCC Big Day Out” and (most exciting for me!) our Executive Principal spoke with me afterwards and was keen to hear of the progress we make. (The Principal of our Waratah campus was also nodding her head in interest and approval!)

KICT’s first official task will be to operate a design competition and to invite our students to submit their own design for use on our students’ computer desktops this year. We thought this would be an excellent way of beginning to building a profile for KICT on our campus and to give the KICT kids an immediate sense of what they might contribute.

…Saturday, Sunday, Monday … back to work to kick off 2009

It is almost beyond comprehension that we began holidays at the end of the first week in December and are now looking down the gun barrel into getting Term 1 2009 up and running. Seems like these last weeks have flown by and almost literally. Well at the very least we have rested and revived our enthusiasm for what we are most passionate about – teaching!

I have similar classes and timetable this year to those I had in 2008. I am looking forward to changing around a few of the texts in the English programs & am hoping I have most of my Yr 9 English class as my Yr 10 class this year. Its always exciting to see what changes and what remains the same when we return to school. Some of our more ‘challenging’ students have moved on and a couple remain to test their teeth on us as we lead them through Yr 10 studies. Our Yr 12 cohort promises to be really switched on and enthusiastic about using their abilities to achieve high results; I anticipate their HSC and UAI will be some of the very best we have ever had.

I have decided to NOT teach the same texts in English again this year; two years running with them to keep the peace is quite enough I think. So am looking forward to some interesting discussions with my Yr 10 English class when I challenge them with sections from Freedom Writers and the film.
